MAORI RUGBY TOUR

PLAYERS TO MAKE THE TRIP*

TWO FROM HOROWHENUA.; ' W. BARCLAY TO CAPTAIN SIDE. H. JACOB NOT AVAILABLE. Following an all-night sitting, the selectors, Messrs W. T. Parata (Otago), A. Takarangi (Wanganui), W. Pitt (Gisborne), P. H. Toipoana (Hawke s Bay), and M. Winiata (Horowhenua), who were appointed to select tho 28 players to do honour for tho Maori Rugby exponents of the Dominion overseas, completed their work this morning, following a medical examination of some of tho players. The following were chosen:—

BACKS. *G. Nepia Hawke’s Bay *W. Barclay Hawke’s Bay A. Falwasser Taranaki T. Robinson Canfterbury *L. Grace To Auto College *W. Lockwood East Coast *H. Phillips Marlborough P. Potaka Wanganui *J. Matthews Poverty Bay P. Haupapa Bay of Plenty D. Tatana Horowhenua Rev. P. Matene North Auckland

W. Barclay has been appointed captain, while R. Bell will take the vicecaptaincy. The average age of the party is estimated to be about 22 years, so there is every possibility that the players will have many more years of active football before them, and thus bring the knowledge acquired on the tour into practice following their return. The inclusion of two Horowhenua players will be received with gratification by enthusiasts at this end of the island, but some disappointment will be felt at the non-inclusion of Akuira, his performance of yesterday entitling him, in the opinion of many, to a place in the side. The absence of Jacob is a surprise, but it is now stated that the Horowhenua captain cannot get away owing to business reasons. Of tho 28 players selected, no less than 15 had been judged on earlier form, for they did not participate in yesterday’s match. These are denoted in the above team by asterisks.
