HOPE FOR THE FAT.

BE SLIM AND LOVELY

THE FASHIONABLE FIGURE. NEW YORK, June 16. Professor. Thomas Wood, in charge of physical education at Columbia University, says women can “reduce” safely if they will follow a certain definito plan. What has surprised him is that lie has found a woman who followed the plan for seven mouths. Her reward was a loss of 401 b of surplus fat. The story, told in an article in the Delinoator, emphasises that safety lies in “reducing” slowly under the care of physicians. A school teacher, the woman, weighed at the outset list 121 b for her Oft /in of height. Her object was to improve her looks and get rid of constant weariness after exertion. To-day she weighs a delightful 9st 41b. “Eat three meals a day,” the doctor advised her, “but don’t eat pies, pastries or sweet desserts. Take the ordinary portion of meat, fish, or chicken and a full portion of watery vegetables like spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, egg-plant, etc., and only a halfportion of itarchy vegetables, such as potatoes, and of rice. “Peas and shelled beans of any kind should be taken sparingly, but don’t be afraid of plenty of fresh fruit, particularly oranges. v “Simple salads, such as lettuce and tomatoes with a light French dressing, should be eaten frequently. “Drink as much water as you like at any time except with solid food. Cane sugar is unwise for you, so drink only one cup of tea or coffee with your

meals, with just half a teaspoonful of sugar. “Some butter should bo taken withat least two meals a day, but sparingly.” . . The teacher visited the doctor weekly, was weighed on tho same scales, and kept an exact account of tho foods eaten at each meal and the amount. She was advised not to eat between meals, and —most important this—to walk from one to threo miles daily. The reducing should not be more than 21b a week, and at the latter part of the dieting not more than lib. Before the dieting started the teacher underwent an examination which showed that she was in general good health. Tests were made fortnightly; then monthly, and after tho first month the teacher visited the doctor fortnightly instead of weekly. Before dieting the teacher took in food values from 2360 to 2700 calories daily, while during tho reducing campaign the calories taken were from 1200 to 1500. Tho story is told, with all sympathy, to the over-plump women of the world.
