Murwillumbah was shocked, amused, or indignant according to the frame of mind of the onlookers, when two Sydney University students, members of a visiting football team, engaged in a horse race, with the main street of the town as the course. From an even start, both horses went away at a great pace, the clattering of hoofs on the hard asphalt being drowned by shouts of “Hold him!” “Lean out on him!” and “Keep his tail up!” Coming round the bend into Murwullumbah street, “Lightfoot” secured a length lead, and despite the frantic efforts of “Glide Along’s” jockey, who used arms and legs to advantage, the positions were unaltered as the steeds dashed past the winning post. In the meantime, Sergt. Brandon had lodged a protest against both runners, and with two of his subordinate officers hurried toward the judge’s box. The jockeys, noticing them, turned their mounts and disappeared over the brow of Church Hill. The sergeant gave chase in a car, and overhauled them in Wollumbin street.
