LANCASHIRE FAILS

BEATEN BY AN INNINGS. AUSTRALIANS’ GOOD BOWLING. MACARTNEY’S FINE AVERAGE. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, Juno 22. The weather was cold and overcast when the cricket match between Australia and Lancashire was resumed. The wicket was in good order. Lancashire continued their second innings, and Mailey and Macartney opened the attack. Six overs sufficed .to effect the separation of Barnes and Green, the latter giving an easy catch at silly point. Macartney again was difficult to play, and Barnes and MacDonald were very lucky in saving their wickets from halls which beat them. MacDonald hit a good leg boundary from a full toss from Mailey, and then was easily held at mid-on through hitting Mailey against the break. After MacDonald’s departure play became somnolent; a-qUarter of an hour produced three runs. Macartney bowled eight maidens in succession, and then Barnes drove him to the off for two. Duckworth was streaky. He hit a three over Richardson’s head at mid-off and a couple almost to the boundary, but he made a mistake in hitting'out at a curly ball from Mailey and was easily taken at fine slip_ by Collins, who just previously had failed to seize the opportunity of dismissing Barnes off Mailey. ■ Barnes put up a stolid defence. He made good forward strokes, but was unable to avoid an innings defeat. Australia won hv an innings and 77 runs. Details are as follow: AUSTRALIA. First innings LANCASHIRE.
