TRAIN SMASH.

EVIDENCE AT INQUIRY. SIGNALS OVER-RUN. MELBOURNE, June 22. The inquest into the Caulfield railway smash has commenced. George Rogers, train running officer, whose duty it is to exercise supervision over the electric and steam trains in the metropolitan district, gave evidence that he was on the platform at Caulfield at the time of the accident, almost opposite where the collision occurred. Three seconds after the smash he looked at the signals and saw six white tell-tale lights, indicating the signals set at “danger.” There was no mist, fog, or rain at the time, and he had no difficulty in observing the signals.—Press Association.

While a passenger train was standing at the station at Caulfield Junction on June 26 another passenger train crashed into its rear, telescoping the two end carriages. Two men were killed and 30 persons injured, seven seriously.
