CHURCH DOCTRINE.
IMPORTANT PROPOSALS. POWER FOR BISHOPS. LONDON, June 22. Far-reaching proposals to endow bishops of the Church of England with unfettered power to declare judgment on matters of doctrine and discipline are embodied'in the report of the Ecclesiastical Courts Commission, which is to be presented to the Church Assembly on July 5. It is proposed that the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the judicial committee of the Privy Council be abolished; that various Acts of Parliament regarding Church discipline should be repealed; that offending clergy should be liable to deprivation or ex-communication by the bishops’ courts.
Bishop Durham, one of the signatories, makes a reservation so far as to express the opinion that the final court on doctrine is incompatible with royal supremacy.—A. and N.Z. cable.
