RED CAP PORTERS.
TWO APPOINTMENTS. The local railway office recently received notification of the fact that the department had decided to invite applications for the position of two red caji porters at the Palmerston North station. Official confirmation has now been received bv Mr Carnachan (acting-stationmaster) from head office of the appointment of two local men to that position and they will commence duties in a few days. Experience in other centres has shown that the innovation has been a success. The porters have proved of unquestionable service to the travelling public, and more especially women and children. Licenses are "granted carefully and men selected have necessarily to be ,of a good type. They work long hours, but have a slack period during tbo middle of the day. Their duties are to meet every incoming train and to be present before the departure of any outgoing passenger train, for the purpose of transporting luggage and charge for this service at a small rate per article.
