NEW SLEEPING CAR.

DESIGNER SATISFIED. TO BE IN USE SOON. The new sleeping car built for the Railway Department passed through Palmerston North on the return journey from Auckland to Wellington today after a most successful trial trip. Mr G. D. Lynd, chief mechanical, engineer to the department, and the designer of the new “sleeper.” with Mr Fay accompanied the car to Wellington.

In conversation with a “Standard” reporter at the local station, Mr Fay, who is the officer in charge of the operation and transport equipment system, explained that the new features had been an unprecedented success, and the new car would probably commence a regular running in a fortnight’s time. During the trial run early this week a glass of water had been placed on one of the tables in the car and, despite the severe curves and bumps generally experienced, not a drop of the liquid had been spilled. “This,” said Mr Fay, “is due to the special three-way springs installed which obviate all jerks when rounding curves.” The officer explained that he had been in practically almost every tvpe of railway car in the world aiid this particular design was equal to any he had seen and had exceeded expectations.

It is understood that ten of the new sleeping cars will he built for service on the Main Trunk line at an early date.
