NEW DENTAL SCHOOL.
OPENED AT DUNEDIN
Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 13. A new dental school costing £41,605 was opened yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Education, Hon. R. A. Wright. Most of the money was found by the Government, but the private gifts included £IOOO from Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., and an X-ray plant costing £4OO from Messrs Hudson and Co. After the Minister’s address, Dr Pickerill, the director, stated that 113 students' were in training last year. The new building provided 60 chairs, and they had 63 students last year taking operative dentistry, so that the new accommodation was just sufficient for present needs. In giving a general address, Dr Pickerill insisted on the importance of apples to prevent the decay of the teeth. Yet. with New Zealand’s abundance, fruit was too dear for daily consumption. He urged Government action whereby sufficient apples for health purposes for New Zealand’s 400,000 children could be stored and rationed at cost throughout the year. In the evening the Dental Students’ Association held a commemoration dinner, the principal guests being Mr Sidey, the chancellor and Mr K. C. Morpeth, chairman of the executive council of the New Zealand Dental Association .
