WAR RELIEF FUNDS
PROBABLE DURATION. ■ A printed return laid before the recent conference of patriotic societies gave some particulars of the administration of the Linds raised for the assistance of returned soldiers which are of interest. The total expenditure for the year ending December 31, 1925, was £98,348 15s 6d, including amongst other items £56,442 10s 5d for relief, £11,926 for comforts, £10,727 17s for salaries. The receipts (including £48,324 2s for interest), totalled £61,649 17s 4d. The total assets in the hands of societies on the same date amounted to £1,154,132 2s lOd, of which £724,274 was invested, £36,376 18s on fixed deposits. £16,623 9s 3d in the Post Office Savings Bank, £175,529 Is 9d in land and buildings (including £103,605 11s lid in Flock House farm) and £20,626 18s 4d in current account. An estimate of the probable life of the principal war funds of the Dominion showed :—Auckland province, 23} years; Gisborne, 39) years; Hawke’s Bay, 21} years; Wellington province, 13 years; Waverley, 85 years; Wanga-nui-Waitotara, 20 years; Hunterville, 4} years; Marton, 10 to 20 years; Bulls, etc., 9 years; Feilding, 4} years; Manawatu, 28 years; Pahiatua, 27j years; War Relief Association (Wellington), 10 years; Nelson, 16 years; Marlborough, 90 years; Christchurch, 11J years; Ashburton, 25 years; Timaru, 10 years; Greymouth, 5 years; Dunedin, 15 years; Oamaru, 51 years; Southland, 24 years. The total number of applications for relief in 1925 was 10,615.
