SPAHLINGER TREATMENT.
ACCIDENT TO SCIENTIST,
A MORE HOPEFUL OUTLOOK
LONDON, Feb. 24. The High Commissioner, Sir James Allen, states that he has been receiving letters from Mr Spahlinger which signify thnt the scientist is in a much more hopeiul frame of mind than he has been for a long time. This, the High Commissioner believes, is owing to the fact that the Swiss Government liavo recognised that they have in their midst a man who must be watched and taken care of. At any rate, the result of the Government’s interest has meant that tho banks which have a mortgage over Mr Spalilinger’s property have realised they must not precipato the scientist into ruin by selling up his laboratory. Consequently they are holding their hands. Mr Spahlinger was to have come over to England last October to inoculate calves for the Crowe Committe. Now, however, it transpires that ho has been ill as the result of an accident. While he was experimenting in his laboratory a test tube containing millions of tubercle baciilli exploded in his face, filling the air with its deadly contents. His assistants rushed out of the room, but Mr Spahlinger did not leave the infected atmosphere until he had plnced his priceless culture in safety. His health has since been causing anxiety. He is now recuperating on tho Riviera and lie does not expect to be able to undertake his promised treatment at Crewe for tuberculosis in cattle until tho end of next month.
