MOTOR REGISTRATION.

REGULATION NOW IN FORCE

In accordance with the -motor reguations, tho local post office staff is at present busily engaged in tho work of registering ownership of motor vehicles and the issuing of plates bearing the registration number of tho vehicle. Tho compulsory registration of all motor vehicles camo into force locally to-day and it is essential that owners comply with the regulations on or before the ]4th inst. For tho_ convenience of residents, attention is directed to the necessity for the production of tho engine and chassis numbers when applying for new numbers, while in the case of visitors it is essential that they produce their certificates. If not in possession of such, it is, however, possible on their giving particulars as to numbers, etc., for the local officials to secure verification of such by telegraph from the office at which the original certificate was issued. Tho steel for tho new plates, which represents 15 per cent, of the cost of production, was imported into tjie Dominion, otherwise they are of homo manufacture, being the work of a Wellington firm. Similar in typo to those in force up to date, the lettering is in white on a black lacquered background instead of green, the numbers for motor cars in this district running front 56,001 to 63,300, while in the case of motor cycles tho numbers run from 1300 to 1500. The low numbers will bo issued in the Auckland province, they gradually ascending tho further south tho issuing office is. However,’in the south, Invercargill will possess tho lowest numbers in that island, the route of distribution according to the numbers being from that point to Dunedin to Christchurch, the West Coast and terminating at Blenheim, the numbers available over tho whole Dominion being from 1 io 12k,800 in the case of motor cars and lorries and 1 to 32,650 in the case of motor cycles.
