SPEECH HEARD CLEARLY
LONDON, March 21. Mr E. J. Simmonds, the wireless experimenter, completed an hour s telephonic talk with Mr C. D. Maclurcan, of Sydney. ,„ . . “Hello! I havo just been talking to Mr Maclurcan,” said Mr Simmonds enthusiastically to 'a newspaper representative in describing the wonderful telephonic achievement, the result of months of patient experimenting. Mr Simmonds explained that, following an arrangement by Morse code with Mr Maclurcan, he doggedly commenced another attempt to talk to Suddenly ho was astonished to find Mr Maclurcan saying by Morse that he was able to hear him perfectly on the loud speaker. Mr Simmonds worked on a wavelength of 45.3 metres, and the power used was 95 watts. Ho decided to tost the accuracy of the voice reception. and read a series of figures, such as tlie barometer reading, the temperaturo of the room, and weather deAltliough the figures included decimals, Mr Maclurcan sent them back without error. He continued to talk until 8.15 p.m., stopping because broadcasting had begun.
“EASILY PICKEP UP.” SYDNEY, March 22. Mr Maclurcan said to-day that, though the tests were carried out at his station at Strathfield, Mv Ross Hull, with whom he is associated, operated at this end. The time was about 4 a.m. A six- valve super heterodyne, designed by Mr Hull, was used to receive speech from Mr Simmonds. Speech from Mr W. Partridge (2Rr), another English experimenter, was also heard on the loud speaker.
