CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP. , AUSTRALIAN VISITOR WINS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 4. An Australian visitor, W. R. Dobson, won the Canterbury amateur golf championship at Shirley. His first round totalled 73 and his second 75, making a total of 148 for the first and second rounds. Dobson is a plus one man. The runner-up was B. V. Wright, of Timaru, tho present champion.' His rounds were 76 and 74, making a total of 150. The stroke fandicap this morning was won by T. H. A. Richards, with 67, and in the afternoon by E. Cordner with a scoro of 71. PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. WELLINGTON, April 4. The provincial golf championships commenced at Heretaunga on Saturday, when tho qualifying round of 36 holes was completed. Entries totalled under 50, being somewhat lower than in previous years, but this is accounted for by counter tournaments. Duncan and Horton returned the best cards during tho day, but even tho best players could do nothing in the heavy westerly gale, which upset approach shots and putting. Players from Masterton, Christchurch and the Wellington district are competing. J. H. Drake returned a card of 77 for 18 holes. In the afternoon there was only one under 80. The following scores qualified, and the last three will have to play off: A D. S. Duncan 155, T. H. Horton 156. J. B. Parker 160, J. H. Drake 160, H. R. H. Balneavis 164, A. E. Conway 164, J. L. AMERICAN TOURNAMENT. NEW YORK, April 2. At Pinehurst R. A. Cruickshank, with 293, won the North v. South open tournament J. H. Kirkwood was fifth with 296.—A. and N.Z. cable.
