RAILWAY STAFF.
GRADUAL REDUCTIONS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 1. Mr W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, recently wrote to the Prime Minister stating that there was great concern among railway tradesmen at Hillside, Napier, and Greymouth who had been dismissed. Unemployment was increasing in Auckland owing to the heavy immigration and the dismissals from the Public Service. He asked:—“Are there likely to be dismissals from the railways here?” Mr Coates has replied: “Owing to the reconstruction of our workshops, it will be found necssary to curtail the staff. Arrangements' will be made to reduce gradually, married men and exsoldiers being given preference.”
