The death has taken place at Nelson of Mr W. Milroy, tho well-known rifleman and former New Zealand champion. Captain 0. V. Ellis lias been posted to the retired list of tho cNw Zealand Forces with permission to retain his rank. Lient. T. B. Slipper, of Wanganui,' 7th New Zealand Mounted Rifles, has been awarded the Colonel Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration. Mr H. O. Saunders, of Messrs O’Connor and Tydeman’s staff, passted the first section of tho examination for the optical diploma held recently in Wellington. Field-Marshall Sir W. R. Birdwood, Bt., G.C.8., has been appointed Colonel-in-Chief of tho Ist New Zealand Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry). A London cablegram announces tho death of Mr W. E. Pease, member of tho House of Commons and director of several engineering companies at Darlington, including tho Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Co. and the Consett Iron Co. Mr W. A. Hawkins, Controller-Gen-eral of the Prisons Department, who has been in tho service of the department for more than tho prescribed forty years, has forwarded his resignation and will shortly retire from the service. Mr Hawkins is over sixty years of age. A motion of condolence with Mr T. P- Hodder in the death of his brother, Mr Reginald Hodder, the author who died in London, was passed at this mornings meeting of the gonoral committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, all present standing in silence.

A .Press Association telegram from Napier states that Mr D. E. D. Bishop, of Christchurch, president of tho New Zealand Swimming Association, was met by the swimmers there to-day and presented with an address signed by representatives of every New Zealand swimming centre in congratulation of attaining his ■2sth year as a member of tho association. Eulogistic speeches were made by delegates from all over New Zealand.
