DARING ROBBERY

THEFT OF DIAMONDS. NOVEL INSTRUMENT USED. HOLE CUT IN SAFE CBy Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 25, 11.25 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 24. Tho most daring robbery recorded for years occurred in a West End jeweller's establishment, the robbers using an instrument two feet high, by a motor and steering wheel, with which a circular hole ten inches across was cut in a massive safe. The tool is now in tho possession of Scotland Yard. It is the first of its kind found by the detectives, having been first heard of in South Africa last year. Three men worked throughout the night and were ready to leave when a charwoman arrived. They actually oponed the door, saying: “Good morning. Como in; we have just finished repairing the electric light.” They thereupon left, taking jewellery, including diamonds, valued at £IO,OOO. It is surmised that they intended carrying away tho instrument, which was mounted on an iron base, but were unablo to do so owing to the arrival of the charwoman.

Tho room was strewn with powder from the fireproof material covering the safe, through which the drill had bored. —A. and N.Z. cable.
