LABOURER GIVEN A CHANCE.

STOLEN MONEY TO BE REPAID.

Described as a labourer, Percy Bartholomew Lamb, 40 years of ago, appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge that, on January 19, at Palmerston North, he did commit theft of £1 16s in money, the. property of James Cook Young. Accused pleaded guilty. Sergeant Power stated that accused had visited the business premises of Mr Young during the temporary absence of that gentleman and had stolen the amount mentioned. He had been followiqd and subsequently arrested, when there was only 14s in his possession. Accused had been on remand for a week and had now had time to get the liquor out of his system. Questioned by the Bench, accused said that at the time of the offence ho was under the influence of liquor. He was sorry that he had committed the offence.

The magistrate: Why did you not give the money back afterwards ? Accused replied that he had given £1 away to a companion. “I will givo you a chance,” said His Worship. “You will be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months, on condition that you repay the stolen amount within one month.”
