NEW OUTLOOK
EMPIRE SETTLEMENT. TRAINING ’VARSITY MEN. LONDON, Jan. 9. Though still in its infancy, the Lynford Hall (Norfolk) scheme for training men for the universities and public schoolboys who desire to settle on tho land in Australia has aroused widespread interest, and is receiving considerable public support, notably from Labour. Mr J. H. Thomas, M.P., who was the Labour Secretary for the Colonies, in welcoming the scheme, points out that its particular merit is that it enables men to test their suitability for overseas careers, and enables competent teachers, knowing the conditions tho settlers will have to face, to advise them about their chances.
Mr W. Lunn, M.P. (Labour) says the scheme is an example of the new outlook prevailing among all classes regarding Empire settlement. “At one time,” he adds, “emigration was regarded as tho last resource for disposing of the ne’er-do-well. The fact that a special college is being established for training men. and boys of education, shows how far we have since travelled.”
Mr H. W. Potts, formerly principal of the Hawkesbury Agricultural College, is associated with Lynford Hall.
