GISBORNE’S DRY SPELL.
WATER SUPPLY THREATENED. POSSIBILITY OF RATIONING. GISBORNE, Jan. 20. Although the Gisborne Borough' Council has not up to the present indicated that the position of the water supply is serious, residents of the Te Arai and Maugapoike districts state that the creek., have seldom been so low. Tho Mangapoilco Creek, from which tho auxiliary supply is phmped, is stated to be exceptionally low, while there is only a trickle in the creek which flows into the settling tank. The pumping station at Mungapoiko was put into operation to-day. The water is pumped over tho top of the hill and into the creek which flows into the reservoir. This is an expensive business, costing close on £IOO a week. • It has been hinted that if present dry weathor continues it may be necessary to ration tho water and allow householders to use it only for stated hours each day.
