SAFEGUARDING DUTIES.

GERMANY COMPLAINS.' BRITISH TARIFF LAWS. LONDON, Jan. 9. Germany continues to protest against the new British safeguarding duties, declaring that they undermine the whole spirit of the recent AngloGorman commercial treaty. “Britain is steadily, departing from the principles of freetrade in favour of high protection, and the outlook must re regarded with anxiety says the Borsen Courier. “The British Government is not merely speeding up the introduction and promulgation of now tariff laws, but is occasionally so quick in imposing duties that German business men are given no chance to make the necessary adjustments to avoid heavy losses.” There are many other similar comments, which, says the Berlin correspondent of the Times, aro all based on the assumption that freetrade in Britain existed sololy for the benefit of foreign importers, and that there is no need for reciprocity in the interests of British trade. The German system of discriminating import licenses and the Gorman high protection tariff, protecting over 800 articles, are conveniently forgotten.
