GREY NURSE SHARK.

CAUGHT AT TAURANGA. STRENGTH OF THE MONSTER. TAURANGA, Dec. 28. A local launch party while fishing yesterday in the upper reaches of the Tauranga inner harbour, off Omokoroa, hooked a grey nurse shark on an ordinary shark hand-line. After a strenuous 20-minut-e battle the creature was eventually brought in closo proximity to the boat and harpooned. The harpoon caused tho shark to renew its fight. Some idea of the monster’s strength is indicated by the fact that it bent the inch piping handrail about the launch by lashes from its tail. When hauled on board the shark was found to measure 7ft 4in. It was a female and evidently was just basking in the shallow water or else seeking a ground to spawn. There is a popular theory that the grey nurse species of sharks is leaving Australian waters and seeking more plentiful food off the New Zealand coasts.
