HOLIDAY BUSINESS FIGURES. INCREASES RECORDED. Complete statistics relative to the volume of business dealt with at the Palmerston North Chief Post Office during tho four days preceding Christmas Day are now available. A comparison with last year A work is difficult, for there were only three working days in the 1924 “Christmas week.” The present Y’uletide business rush, however, shows an increase over that of last year when all circumstances are taken into account. It will bo remembered that just before last Christmas there were unseasonable floods and a serious railway hold-up on that account near Ngaio, which was responsible for mail business accumulating and arriving at the local office in a rush, to be ■ dealt with in the three days preceding Christmas Day.

MAIL BAGS AND PARCELS. Tho number of mail bags and parcels receptacles handled in the Chief Post Office this year was as follows: Monday, December 21 .483 Tuesday, December 22 '602 Wednesday, December 23 617 Thursday, December 24 ...... 531 Total 2233 The total is three more than for the three days’ Christmas week of 1924 when, as stated, a deal of accumulated mails was dealt with. Mail bags and hampers transhipped at the Palmerston North railway station were as follow : December 21 1755 ! December 22 1827 December 23 2094 December 24 1502 Total 7178 The total last year was 7126, under tho circumstances described above. TELEGRAMS. 4 The statistics relative to telegrams this holiday season are as under:

It.i3 a peculiar coincidence that thia year one more telegram was forwarded on Christmas Eve than for the corresponding day of last year, and that the number of telegrams received was the same on that day this year as on last year. STAMP SALES. Stamp sales lor the Palmerston North postal district were as under:

No comparison in this respect is possible, for last year this was not a separate district. WELLINGTON OEFICE. During the four days preceding Christmas at the Wellington Post Office the number of mail bags and parcel receptacles despatched and received was 20,341, compared with 12,578 in 1924. Stamp sgles amounted to £5040 8s 4d, compared with £5045 18s 4d in 1924.
