COLD WEATHER.

UNITED STATES VISITED. NEW YORK, Dec. 26. A cold wave struck many parts of tlie country to-day, bringing suffering and deatli in its wake. A gale struck •New York, bringing the thermometer to 18 degrees above zero and covering the city with whirling dust and smoke from bituminous burning fires. The temperature in Chicago was two degrees below zero, and five persons died from cold. Eort Covcngton, New York, reported 18 degrees below zero, and Minneapolis 13 degrees below. The storm, which started east from Kansas on Thursday morning, bringing the cold wave, was centred off the Nova Scotia coast this morning, and was continuing out to sea. The weather reports showed below zero temperatures as far south' as the middle portions of the States bordering on the Gulf of Mexico. The weather bureau states that the cold will hold throughout the coming week, and predicts heavy snowstorms. Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota were the heaviest sufferers, but the lack of coal aggravated the situation in many States. —A. and N.Z. cable.
