BEACH CARNIVALS.
LYALL BAY AND PETONE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 27. Boxing Day carnivals were held nt Petone and Lyall Bay. In the latter more than usual interest was manifested in the bathing beauty contest, for which a large number of entries were received. Judging was declared most difficult, particularly among the placed ladies. Airs Scale (Wellington) was first, Aliss G. Smith (Pet-one) second, and Miss H. Eglinton (Fentlierston) third. Various side shows were well patronised. The gala will be continued for a week and the proceeds will be devoted to tho Surf and LifeSaving Societies. Tho Alayor, Air C. 13. Norwood, opened the Lyall Bay proceedings and eulogised the- work of tho clubs. He said that while the council could not go on with the immediate construction of tho promenade and bathing sheds, he hoped before long that they would bo an accomplished fact. The children’s fancy dress competition was won by Alisses D. and F. Harris (Dutch couple). The Petone' beach carnival was also well patronised, visitors coming from the city and all districts up the Hutt Valley. The Petone Rowing Club also held a regatta in connection with the gala.
