MANAAVATU v. SOUTHERN HAAVIvE’S BAY.

Weather conditions were not too promising when play was resumed at the Sportsground this morning in the cricket match between Hastings juniors and a Manawatu second eleven, and a commencement was made in the representative game between Southern Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu. In the last-named match Southern Hawke’s Bay won the toss and elected to bat, McPherson and Pickard being the opening pair. The latter faced the bowling of G. K. Hollier and scored a single off the fourth ball of tho over. McPherson made no attempt to score off the remaining deliveries. Twenty was showing on tho board at the end of 35 minutes’ play, when McPherson was caught by Scorgie at cover point off McSwceny. The retiring batsman had compiled 17 in careful fashion, lnglis, the newcomer, opened aggressively, and runs came at a faster rate. Fifty was telegraphed at the end of an equal number of minutes. Two overs later McDonald shattered Bott’s stumps.—s7—3—l4. Armistoad went on, and, with eight more added to the scoro, lnglis returned one to McSweeny. The retiring batsman had contributed 27 in attractive manner and bad found the boundary on three occasions. Mair scored a single off McSweeny and was then bowled by McDonald.—66 —s—l. Pick, the newcomer, lasted three balls and was then smartiy stumped by Broughton.—66— 6—o. McDonald’s average at this stage was four for 17. When stumps were drawn yesterday in tho match between Hastings and Manawatu, the latter, replying to the visitors’ first innings score of 365, had compiled 160 for the loss of seven wickets, Hollier and Piercy, with 18 and 24 respectively, being the not-out men. Tho pair did not remain associated long this morning, for in the third over, with only six more added to tho overnight score, Hollier was clean howled by Nairn. . The retiring batsman had contributed 19, including three boundaries. McGonigal went on and opened with a single off the fifth ball he faced. Ten minutes later Nairn got McGonigal’s wicket.—l 7 Manawatu at this stage required 87 runs to save a follow-on. However, the innings did not last much longer, for, when five had been added, Piercy was nicely taken by Bickley off Nairn. Tho batsman had made 39, the second highest scoro for Manawatu, and had hit two sixes.

Compelled to follow on, Manawatu required 183 to savo an innings’ defeat, which figure by a coincidence was identical with that returned in their first visit to the wickets. Young and G. South opened, and at the end of ten minutes’ play that number of runs was on the telegraph. With the score at 38, South was bowled by S. Mitchell. The luncheon adjournment was taken eight runs' later, Young and Gallichan being not out with 17 and 2 respectively. Detailed scores:—
