SPREAD IN AMERICA. DANGER TO-THE CROPS. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received December 26, 10.40 a.m. OTTAWA, Dec. 24. Owing to the continued spread of European corn borer tho com crop in North America is in danger according to a statement by Mr Arthur Gibson, Dominion entomologist for the Federal Department of Agriculture. Mr Gibson says the caterpiller has spread like wildfire during the last two years. Mr Gibson states that Ontario is the only province interested as yet, but the pest has spread into Ohio and Michigan and undoubtedly will soon reach the great corn belt in tho United States.—Reuter. REASSURING STATEMENT. NO OCCASION FOR ALARM. Received December 26. 10.40 a.m. WASHINGTON, Dec. 24. That the ravages of the European corn borer, while potentially dangerous, are not acute in the United States is the opinion of Doctor Howard, chief bureau entomology of the Department of Agriculture as described in Canada. Dr Howard made it clear that ,there was no present ground for a “scare” because of tho pest.—A. and N.Z. cable.
