RACING CARNIVAL

COMMENCES TO-DAY.

LARGE ATTENDANCE AT AWAPUNI.

Tbo Christmas racing carnival opened to-day with meetings in many parts of the Dominion, notably those at Auckland, Palmerston North, Dunedin, New Plymouth and AVaipukurau. Owing to tho telegraph office being closed or open only during the morning, no results are available of the outside meetings, apart from Auckland and Dunedin. In the latter cases, the results are restricted to three events, the local telegraph office being closed at 2 p.m. MANAWATU MEETING. CUP DAY AT AWAPUNI. There was a very large attendance at Awapuni racecourse when the Manawatu Club’s meeting commenced at noon, the sportsmen present including visitors from all over the district and other place further afield. The course, following attention in the past few days, and due to tho rain overnight, was in excellent order. Details of tho racing up to the time this edition went to press were as follow: —

TOIvOMARU HURDLES, of 250 sovs, second horse 50 sovs, third horse 25 sovs. One and three-quarter miles. 3 Mr W. H. McSweeney) 9.0, 8 Axle (Robinson) 9.0, 9 Lady Dolwill (Jenkins) 9.0. There were two scratcliings —Eonmark and Comedy Prince—for the opening event of the meeting. Santiago was a good favourite, with Highway and Many Colours also in keen demand. On tho release of the tapes Highway went to the front and showed the way to Admiral Codrington, Alxe, Sir Fanciful and Many Colours. Going along the back Te Maire ran into fourth place, and a few chains further on Axle and Admiral Codrington had taken the lead. Entering tho straight for the first time Axlo and Highway were piloting the field, with Admiral Codrington, Te Maire and Lady Dolwill, who had been badly left at the start, next. Going around the bend the leaders were still unchanged, but The Emperor and Many Colours had moved up, Sir Fanciful tailing the field. At tho far turn Many Colours was in front. The latter was joined by Highway entering the straight and in the raco to the post Many Colours lasted long enough to head Highway by a good length, Santiago, who had experienced difficulty in getting through, being third and The Emperor fourth. Time 3.15.

The other starters were: 10 Capitulation (Rosewarne), 1L Joyeuse (Burns), 13 Killaddie (Trillo), 5 Kyla (Stokes), 6 Panart (Green), 4 Pardon (Tremaine), 8 Ruby Red (Miles), 9 Sasham (Butler), 7 Tannadic-o (IVlackie), 12 Wanderlust (Waddell). The scratching pen reduced the field in the Maiden Plate td thirteen, Avazone, Dale Ogden, Golden Egg, Ohorere, Piuthair, Royal Land and War Kit declining their engagements. From a good start, Bank Draft was the first to become prominent with Kyla, Joy Bird, Tannadico and Anklet next. At the three-furlong post Joy Bird was in tho van, Bank Draft, Wanderlust, Kyla and Anklet heading the others. Turning for home the order was: Joy Bird, Bank Draft and Tannadice, but passing the stand Anklet had joined the leaders and in a great race to tho post Bank Draft got the verdict by half a neck from Anklet, with Joy Bird a head away third. Time, 1.16 3-5.

AUCKLAND RACES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 26. The A.R.C. summor meeting is being held in fine weather. The course is in good order and thero is a large attendance. Results: QUEEN’S PLATE, of 600 sovs, One mile. Star Stranger ... ... ... 1 Horomea ... ••• ... 2 Mosaic ... ... ••• 3 Scratched: King Smock, Lapidary, Rangatahi, Titaness, Lomint and AVenday. Won by two and a-lialf lengths, a neck between second and third. Timo, 1.39 4-5.
