EARTH TREMOR

FAIRLY SEVERE SHAKE. FELT IN PALMERSTON NORTH. A rather severe shock of earthquake was felt in Palmerston North about 3.47 on Christmas Eve. It was preceded by a distinct rumbling noise which sounded to many indoors like a heavy cart or motor lorry passing by. The shock itself was of short duration and passed unnoticed by the great majority of those in the streets, which were crowded at the time. In some cases shoppers. commenced to make their way out into tho open but tho tremor was so soon over that there was little interruption of business.

CONCRETE BUILDING CRACKED

Per Press Association, MASTERTON, Dec. 25.

An earthquake of unusual severity, was experienced yesterday at 3.40 p.m. The shake was preceded by a pronounced rumbling for about ten seconds. The severity of the tremor occupied five seconds, during which buildings rocked perilously. No serious damago is reported, tho most severe sufferers apparently being the crockery shops, where Christmas displays were disturbed. Tho town Was full of Christmas shoppers, and many shops were quickly emptied, the severity of the tremor causing considerable alarm. Perry’s buildings, a twostorey concrete structure, which swayed treacherously throughout the shake, was cracked from the top of the parapet down for about eight feet. The shake is considered the most severe sinco 1912.
