YOUNG WOMAN ARRESTED. FAINTS IN COURT. MORRIXSVILLE, Nov. 9. Hazel Mary Carswell, aged 24, appeared at the'Police Court, on a charge of forging and uttering a cheque tor £8 4s, forging an endorsement of “R. Cairns” on a cheque for £l, issued by Dora Abbot, theft of 10s, the property of Dora Abbot, and theft of two cheque forms, the value of fourpence from Dora Abbot. According to the evidence, accused, who had been engaged by Mrs Abbot, of Tatanui, as lady help, for the past fortnight, stated that sno had been a nurse in a maternity home at Otahuhu and at Auckland Hospital. Accused, it was alleged, stole two cheques from Mrs Abbot’s cheque book, and, forgoing Mrs Abbot’s name, made one out for £8 4s in favour of “Nurse Elliott,” whoso name she endorsed on the cheque when she cashed it at Gummer’s drapery stores at Morrinsville. Irreguarity in the signature was detected when it reached the bank. Constable Jackson read a statement made by accused admitting her guilt. Then the girl, who had been holding her head in her hands, fell forward in a faint, and was carried from the Court. When the Court resumed after half an hour’s adjournment, accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence. 1
