MEETING OF COMMITTEE

Tho monthly meeting of the Collego Street School Committee was held last night, • Mr E. V. AVest presiding. Others present were: Mrs BridenJones, Messrs T. Ingles, S. AA r . Oliver, H. C. Le Grange and the headmaster (Mr AY. A. Swinbourn).

CORRESPONDENCE

From Dr Gunn, asking for a donation towards the annual health camp at Turakina. —Received.

From the Borough Council, stating that it had been decided to“ remit charges recently made in connection with water for the school. —Received. From Messrs Durward and Birnie in reference to the proposed junior high school for - Palmerston North.—Received.

HEADMASTER’S REPORT

The headmaster reported that tho roll at present was 565 and the attendance yesterday 530. The average last week was 520. During the month Dr Gunn and Nurse Nelson and Messrs Skinner and Lange, truant inspector and agricultural supervisor respectively, had visited the school. The school had been closed on Labour Day and for the elections. The trainees had done very well in the recent examinations. Misses Niccol and Anderson and Messrs McSwecney and Snell would go to the Training Collego next year. Misses Blamires and Fabrin had been absent owing to examinations and sickness. He iiad received a photograph of the late Hon. AV. F. Massey which he would like framed. Tho new lawn had been completed and mown, and added much to tho appearance of the school. The windows had all been mended, but other repairs authorised last month had still to be done. In addition 15 new windows required new cords. Tho boundary fence near tho tennis court urgently needed attention. The school required one large and seven small mats. The working beo had almost completed the racks in the cycle shed, but tho grass in the playground needed cutting. Another matter requiring attention was the week-end trespass on the grounds, as evidenced by the beer bottles lying about on Monday mornings. He had already complained- to tho police. There was a movement afoot to establish a junior high school in Palmerston North, and it was an innovation which was bound to be introduced shortly. Ho suggested that the most suitable method of working out the scheme was to attach tho school to the present primary schools. He would like the committee to discuss the question.

GENERAL.

It was decided to donate £ls to the health- camp to be conducted by Dr Gunn, Mr AVest adding the sum of £5 to the donation..

Tho proposed junior high school scheme was discussed at length, the general opinion being that the suggestion of the headmaster was a good one. The distance from the children’s homes to any one school was emphasised, it being considered that it would be unfair to ask a child to travel from, say, Hokowliitu, AVest End, or College Street, to Central School. The chairman said that ho had given thought to the question, and considered that the headmaster’s idea was the best. He moved that the board be written to stating that, as far as College Street School was concerned, the, committee was in favour of a junior'high school division being attached to the present school. This was carried unanimously. AVith tho object of raising funds, it was decided to conduct a concert in tho school on November 25. Mrs Briden-Jones offered to interview old pupils so as to arrange .a diversified programme.

Accounts amounting to £1 Is lOd were passed for payment.
