METROPOLITAN HANDICAP.

The Banker was scratched for the Metropolitan Handicap at 11.20 a.m. yesterday, and when they paraded Zouave was the only other absentee (writes the special correspondent of the Dominion at Christchurch. Rapine was a warm favourite, and carried more than twice tho money on the second favourite. Royal Divorce, Ravenna and Deucalion were well backed. Rapine was well back early, but Reed let him find his feet, and when the straight was reached brought him along to score very decisively from Haze, who was well up from the nine furlong post onwards and right up to the timo Rapine made his run looked likely to bring off a surprise. It was a fair improvement on his form in the Spring Plate, but he has still to win a race. This makes his seventh timodn second place. Red % Wink was sore, and ran last all the way. Tanadees never made a showing, but Royal Divorce was always handy, and finished a close fifth. Clarinda improved on her form the first day, and ran a fine race into fourth place. Merry Day finished at a great rate, and cut everything down in the straight except the first two horses. Ravenna ran a fine race, and was there until the straight was reached, and Waetca again ran a game race. Kilfaire finished sixth; and improved a little on„his Cup running. Without \ being dangerous, Phoenix Park was prominent early, but failed to see it out. Happy Days ran well for a mile. With Rapine and Star Stranger in the Canterbury Cup, the Derby winner, Runnymede-, will not have matters all his own way. Te Kara unfortunately has just about broken down as the result of his race in the New Zealand Cup, and is to be sent back to Auckland.

SANSOVINO INJURED

LONDON, Oct. 29. Sansovino, while competing at Newmarket, injured a suspensory ligament, ending his career on the racecourse. Sansovino is a four-year-old bay horse by Swynford from Gondolette, and last year had a hollow win in the English Derby, for which he started favourite. Later in the season he failed to get a place in the St. Leger.
