BOARDING HOUSE BURNED.
BIG BLAZE AT PAEROA. MAN INJURED BY JUMPING. PAEROA, Nov. 6. Fire occurred at four o’clock this morning in a two-storey building occupied as a boarding house by Mr and Mrs Gillard. The outbreak had a firm hold in the rear portion before it was noticed. The Paeroa brigade responded quickly to the alarm, but there was no hope of saving the building, and they directed their attentions to the neighbouring buildings, which with difficulty they managed to save. , Fortunately there were only six boarders in the premises at the time, five of whom escaped in thir night attire. For some time anxiety was felt for the safety of the other lodger, as no sign of him could be found. It transpired later that he had not returned from a dance. One boarder, Mr Geary, sufiered a fracture of the leg, the result of jumping from one of the top windows after finding his means of exit cut off. The building, which was owned by Mr John Kennedy, was insured for £4OO. A stable adjoining the building was also totally destroyed. It was covered by insurance to the extent of £SO. Mrs Gillard’s furniture and effects were insured for £505.
