FEILDING NEWS

PUBLIC SCHOOLS'.

AMATEUR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The annual meeting of tho Feilding Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association was held on Saturday evening. Mr R. L. Mcelroy presidod. Tho following report was adopted:—“lt is with regret that we tho season just past was the least satisfactory in the history of tho association. This was due to circumstances over which the association had no control. Full arrangements were made for tho conduct of the annual sports in March last-, but we were compelled to abandon tho project owing to the regrettable epidemic of infantilo paralysis. When schools did resume late in April, it was felt that the season was too far advanced to do anything in the nature of a sports meeting and, moreovor, as the children had already lost so much valuable time, it was not desirable to encroach furthor. At tho last annual meeting of the association, it was decided not persevere further with tho elocutionary and musical competitions and as tho sports were abandoned, the committee has not had a strenuous year’s work. No members’ subscriptions wore collected during the year and, as wo had a number of expenses in advertising, etc., for tho abandoned sports, the credit balance of tho association has been reduced and now stands at £l2 10s Bd. We have in hand material, etc., of an estimated value of £52. and, with the usual members’ subscriptions this year, and a fine sports day, wc should be assured of success. Wo intend to make an active canvass for members this year and it is hoped that all will assist us in our efforts. Our thanks are due to the press for the generous way wo have been treated at all times and to tho many willing helpers who are always so ready to come to our aid rthen required. The prospects for the coming season appear particularly bright and wo feel we can look forward to ono of the best seasons the association has ever experienced.” In speaking to the report Mr G. Fitzpatrick reported the decision of tho Wanganui Education Board in declining to countenance tho competitions, as ho had Ikjoii credibly informed that both the singing and elocution in tho schools had suffered. . , The following officers wero appointed for tho ensuing year: President, Mr R. L. Mcllroy; vice-president Miss H. Shortall and Mr G. J. Fitzpatrick; committee, Miss Mahoney and Messrs McCorkindale, Gifford, Amaclio, Bramwell, Feeney, Hausmann, Groomsbridge, McLean, Jackson, Heath, Burns, Tankcrsley and Wild. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

Tho schodulo of tho spring show of the Foilding Horticultural Society has now been issued and may bo obtained from the lion, secrotary, Mr F. L. Gotz. It comprises cut flowers decorative, fruit cookery (both open and novice), as well as tho children’s section. An interesting featuro of the evening session will bo a poster parade for which already over 20 entries have been received.
