MEANS NAVAL SECURITY.

MR AMERY’S STATEMENT

LONDON, Nov. 7. Mr L. C. Amery, speaking at Portsmouth, said the Government could look back on the year’s work with satisfaction. While rigid economies were necessary, it was- determined not to let the navy down. It had resumed work at Singapore base, without which it could not protect a £1,000,000,000 of sea trade, and not go to Australia and New Zealand’s help in time of danger. Singapore, he added, meant laying the moral foundations of naval cooperation between the nations of the Empire in the future, as well as ensuring naval security in the days immediately ahead.—A. and N.Z. cable.
