ANTWERP TRAGEDY.
TRIAL OF TOWERS. Received November G. 1.10 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 5. At the trial of Towers, first officer of the steamer Melita, charged with the murder of Captain Clews and the attempted murder of Gilmour, Mr Holliday, the prosecuting counsel, said that accused after the tragedy said that he intended to kill Captain Clews, Gilmour, McLennan, tho purser, and himself, but tho revolver failed. Counsel expressed the opinion that the prisoner, doubtless, was suffering from the idea that he was being persecuted and brooding.over bis lack of progress in the service. Medical evidence was given that ’Towers was physically fit and mentally sound. —A. and N.Z. cable. Towers is alleged to have shot- the captain dead when at Antwerp. Accused is aged 5G and is a nativo of Bristol.
