Sir Janies Parr lvas a passenger for Wellington by tho' south-bound Main Trunk express this morning. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady, of the local police' force, left for tho south yesterday on his annual leave. The Governor-General spent a quiet day in Dunedin yesterday. He was not engaged in any official functions. —Press Association. Mr Walter Blundell, managing director of the Evening Post, who has been visiting tho Manawatu Show, returned to Wellington to-day. The death occurred yesterday of Mr John Nix, of Tauherenikau, who was born on board a ship just as it reached Wellington 73 years ago. He was a successful breeder of Romney Marsh sheep and’ owned several racehorses. A London cable announces the appointment of Mr Bonald McNeill as financial secretary to the Treasury. Mr McNeill was born in Antrim, Ireland. in 1861 and was educated at Oxford. He is a barrister and journalist, having several thought-provok-ing publications to his credit. He was assistant editor of the eleventh edition of the Encyclopaedia Britanniea, 1906-11, The death is announced front Syd--ne.v of Mr J. J. Whyte, of Gleninnes, who was prominent in wool circles. Deceased was to liavo married Mjss May C. Brown, known as “Sister Scatter joy,” of the Christchurch Sun, who is now in Sydney. In September last, on tho first day out on a voyage to Sydney, Miss Brown received a radio message informing her of the illness of Mr Whyte, who had been in liospital ever since. Advice of tho death at Dunedin last evening of Rev. Samuel Morris, pastor of the North East Valiev Baptist Church, has been received by Rev. C. W. Duncumb. The deceased gentleman, who had been in that charge for nine years, collapsed at the close of the evening service on Sunday last and gradually sank. He had been in New Zealand for 18 years and was still a comparatively young man, being about 45 years of age. Ho was secretary of tlie Otago-Southiand Baptist Auxiliary and by virtue of this office held a seat on the executive of the-New Zealand Baptist Union. At the last conference of this latter body Mr Morris preached the special missionary sermon. Mrs Morris is at present on her way back from a visit to England.
