DAMASCUS RIOTS.
THE FRENCH VERSION. “AIOST AIOD lilt ATE MEASURES.” Received November 5, 1.50 p.m. PARIS, Nov. 4. An official accpunt of the events in Damascus, issued by the Foreign Office, based on a report from General Sarrail says: “Two bands on October 18 entered Cliagour and Medan quarters and overwhelmed tho police. Their numbers were swollen by looters. The French established a barrage round tho European quarters. Tho insurgents next day resumed firing aild attempted to invade the other quarters. The French command, anxious to avoid fighting, ordered a slow bombardment. A number of shells fell in the native quarters, where the insurgents concentrated. The insurgents surrendered on October 20. Tho mfedsures to suppress tho revolt were most moderate compared with the extent of the movement. No European civilian was killed or Wounded. The French losses were 10 killed and 30 wounded, including three Frenchmen and two who were massacred. Tho rebels had 200 killed. Tho material damage was limited to the native area. iNo Arab buildings of architectural or historical interest were affected.A. and N.Z. cable.
