OPERATIC SOCIETY.

“LES CLOCHES DE CORNEVILLE.”

A larger audience than on the preceding nights witnessed the third successful production of. Planquette's charming comic opera “Les Cloches de CorneviUe’' by tue Palmerston North Amateur Operatic Society. Pliinquette’s music is very beautiful and more tuneful than that of the other French composer of light opera, Andre iVlessuger, who was responsible for the melodies of ‘‘Vcronique” and “Tne Little Mich us.” The principals again revelled in their work and acted and sang to advantage, notably Miss N. Whailey as Serpolette, tho lioydenisli village maiden wlio Ire comes a Countess for a time; Miss A. Ashworth as the demure Germaine, ward of Gaspaid; Mr A. McKegg as the Marquis de Vilieroi and Mr B. Jacobs as the miserly Gaspaid. The ensemble do good work in all departments, while the ballets are very beautiful, Misses Diana Tabor and Eileen St-one being the solo dancers. The orchestra, under tho able direction of Mr A. J. Graham, the musical director, is one of the delights of the evening and at last night’s performance was nicely balanced and restrained. It is much ahead of the average amateur society’s orchestra, and Mr Graham is to be congratulated on his excellent conducting. He has the following instruments under his control: Five violins, double bass, flute, A and B clarinets, bassoon, tenor saxophone, cornet, trombone, drums and pianoforte.
