A FRACAS AT WAIHI.
MAN SAVAGELY ATTACKED. MAN AND WOMAN CONVICTED. WAIHI, Nov. d. A fracas at a house in "the east end of the town some weeks ago, as a result of which a miner, William Itudd, received injuries to Ins head through being strucK with a gas ring, had its sequel ill Court before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., to-day. Itudd proceeded against Elizabeth Guy and Cyrus Lewis for alleged assault. During the hearing much dirty linen was washed. It was said that ltydd had been struck on the head with a poker by Mrs Guy, who came armed With the weapon to his place looking for her. brother-in-law, Lewis, and that Lewis hit Rudd on the head with a- gas ring, inflicting' injuries which might have proved fatal. The affair occurred in the early hours of the morning.
The defence was that Lewis had struck .Rudd to defend his sister, whom Rudd had caught bv the throat. Mrs Gu y struck Rudd because lie used obscene language to her. The magistrate said he was not satisfied with the pleas of provocation. Tile affair-had developed into a serious fracas, and it was lucky Rudd was not killed.
Lewis was convicted and fined £lO and cofits, and Mrs Guy was convicted and lined £5 and costs, half the fines to go to Rtidd.
