SPRING SHOW

GOOD ATTENDANCE YESTERDAY. A D DITIONAL AWARDS. A very large number attended the Spring Show yesterday afternoon, despite the threatening naturo of the weather and occasional showers. The industrial hall was packed with slowly moving crowds, while the street of sideshows presented an animated spectacle. There was, too, a good attendance of the public about the oval to watch the leaping competitions. AFFORESTATION. Ihe State Forest Service has again staged a display of photographs illustrating its operations and various features of afforestation and the denudation of soils where the bush has been cleared away. The various types of eucalypti in different stages of growth are effectively illustrated, together with photographs of redwoods as grown in New Zealand with much success. Samples of woods are also on view in the department’s tent. PLUNKET ROOM. A valuable asset to the women-folk attending the carnival is the Plunket room, a very comfortably furnished commodious apartment wherein a restful half-hour may be spent away from the hurrying crowds. It is conducted by the Plunket nurses and members of the committee. JUDGE’S COMMENTS. PIG SECTION. Commenting on the pig section, the judge. Mr R. Charmlcy, of Karitaki, said that the entries were only moderate, which fact was accountable for to some degree by the absence of Porirua exhibits. The Bcrkshires and Tamwortlis were very creditable, the aged sows in the former class being outstanding and of very even quality. The sow that he had awarded the championship to in this class was a very fine animal. With regard to the Yorkshire section, lie had seen better pigs of this breed. HORSE CLASSES AND COMPETITIONS. Mr Norman Banks, judge of harness and saddle horses, thoroughbreds and competitions, said that he had been disappointed with the harness classes, except that for horses under 14 hands, which, although small in number of entries, was good. He considered that the horse which won the maiden hunters’ competition had given a really splendid exhibition. In fact, this competition right through was very good. The wire jumping was also good, and a severe test had to be given to get the placed horses. The harness classes were deteriorating, both in number of entrants and quality, which was accountable for by the advent of the motor ear. Ihe entries and the standard had diminished considerably since his judging here 20 years ago. COMPETITIONS.
