FROM THE KING

MESSAGE TO CHILDREN. “SHALL I SEND HIM YOUR LOVE?” A message to the children from King George V. of England was delivered bj* the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, at the opening of tho open-air school at Cashmere Hills, Christchurch, on Monday (says the Press). The children were drawn up on the school ground for the ceremony. The Governor-General told the residents that he had a special message for the children, and going near to them, he sympathised with them for having had to listen to long speeches about which they would not be able to understand much. “What Lady Alice and I really came here for was to see all of you,” he continued, “because I have a message to you from the King, George V. You probably don’t believe it, but before we left England the King told us to see as many of the children as we could, because he took a great interest in all the children of the Empire. Whenever I write to him I tell him all about you. and he never fails to reply and to say that he is glad to hear about you.” “When I write to him the next time and tell him I have met you, what message shall I give him from you? Shall I send him your love?” There was a small chorus of “yes,” but most of the little folk had not recovered torn the amazement of being spoken to so personally. Sir Charles continued:—“New Zealand is part of the Great Empire of which the King is tho head, and he keeps it all together. Loyalty to the King means that you look to the King at the top and then resolve to carry on and attend to your work as your fathers did before you. Try, as 3-011 grow up to do 3'our best for your country.”
