DOUBLE BETTING.

SHEARSBY AGAIN BEFORE COURT. FINE OF £lO IMPOSED. Alfred Granville Shearsby, who, it will be remembered, was convicted and fined £IOO last week for using his residence in Chelwood street as a common gaming house, again appeared before Air J. L. Stout, S.M., at tlio Magistrate’s Court this morning—this time on a charge that, on October 7, at Palmerston North, he did publish a document, namely, a double card, ou the Wellington Handicap and Shorts Handicap, run at Wellington on October 24. Accused, through his solicitor, Air Ongley, pleaded guilty. The charge against 'accused, said counsel, was that mentioned in the court proceedings last week, and had really been the foundation of those proceedings. Some time back a man ,giving the name of Crawford had written to accused from Hamilton asking for a double card. The writer had mentioned that lie had been told of accused’s operations by a man named Cate, who was known to Shearsby. Accused had complied with the request and it had turned out that “Crawford” was a constable. Shearsby last week had been convicted for keeping a common gaining house, .but counsel thought that His Worship, in inflicting the maximum fine, had taken accused’s bookmaking operations into consideration. Counsel therefore asked that Shearsby bo treated leniently this time.

Detective-Sergeant Quirke said that accused had been extensively corresponding with different parts of tlio Dominion, and Had worked up a large double betting business. Ho had been leniently treated last, week, for he could have been brought before tho Court on a charge of bookmaking, which carried a heavier penalty. Accused was not paying tho fine; tho, public was finding the money. Tho Magistrate imposed a fine of £lO, with costs 7s.
