THIRD GRADE MATCHES. Two third grade cricket matches were contested at Terrace End Park on Saturday afternoon, Phoenix opposing Albion and Kia Ora facing Gordon. The wickets were in excellent order and the outfield fast. Batting first against Phoenix, the Albion eleven compiled 83, Birch being reponsible for 34 and C. Henderson 22 (not out), to which Phoenix replied with 98, E. Fletcher witli 26 (not out) and Rogel with 20 being the principal scorers. At their second visit, Albion registered 76 (D. Lovelock) 29 and at call of time Phoenix had lost five wickets for 52 runs which gave to them the victory by 15 runs on the first innings. Bowling for Albion, Saunders returned the good figures of six wickets for 51 runs, while for Phoenix McLaren acounted for seven opponents at a cost of 36 runs. Kia Ora, opposing Gordon, secured a four point win. The winners in their first strike compiled 85 (De Vanticr 26) and in their second 100, De Vanticr being again at the head of the contributors with 43. Gordon by knocking up 102 (McKenzie 54) at their first visit to the wickets held an advantage of 17 runs on the first innings, hut were dismissed for 78 (Spring 23, McKenzie 20) at their second and thus lost by the narrow margin of five runs on the two innings. Bowling for Kia Ora, Trow secured four wickets for 13 runs in the first innings and Cowley five for 11 in the second, while C. Spring secured five wickets at a cost of 25 runs in Kia Ora’s first innings.
