The death occurred yesterday, following an illness extending over rnaHy years of Mr Samuel Charles Buckman, of 45 Bourke street. Born at Wairau valley, Marlborough, some 66 years ago, the deceased gentleman followed farming pursuits in that neighbourhood until 1895 when he came north to Palmerston North. A few years later he re-entered farming circles in the Dannevirke district where he made his home for 17 years, later removing to Makino where ho remained for four years prior to returning to this centre. Twenty years ago, Mr Buckman suffered a severe injury as a result of being crushed by a log and, despite continuous medical attention, little could bo done to relieve his suffering. Acting on medical advice he entered a private hospital on Tuesday last to undergo an operation, and up till Sunday evening he appeared to be progressing favourably. However, he then took a turn for the worse and a long period of suffering was brought to a close yesterday afternoon. There are left to mourn their loss a widow, one son in Mr Charles Buckman, of Christchurch, one step-daughter, Mrs Cobbe, of Napier road, and two step-sons, Messrs John McGlashan (Eketahuna) and Alexander McGlashan (Bay of Plenty). Miss Rosina Buckman, the well-known operatic singer, is a niece of the deceased gentleman, and Messrs Robert Buckman, of Shannon, and George Buckman, of Apiti, are brothers.
