DEADLOCK CONTINUES. DIFFICULTY OF POSITION. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received July 20, 10.15 a.m. LONDON, July 19. The coal deadlock continues. Tho Government inquiry will be resumed on Monday, but the miners will not be represented. Mr Cook, the miners’ secretary, is spending tne week-end preparing the miners’ case for a special meeting of the trade Union Congress at London on Friday. While it is agreed that an industrial alliance cannot he created in time to help the miners next month, plans are being prepared by which the union can take a ballot of members quickly on the question of supporting tile miners by embargoes against the handling of coal, a fighting fund, etc. Mr J. H. Thomas, Railway Union official, speaking at Bakewell, Derbyshire, on Saturday, said: “Things never looked blacker,” you cannot expect to find contentment when the workmen are denied a living wage. ’ Sir L. Worthington Evans, speaking at Dunmow, said: “The difficulty of the l position is that both the men and the employer? are in the right. What is wrong is the world price ol coal.” — A. and N.Z. cable. PROPOSED ALLIANCE. TRADE UNIONS’ CONFERENCE. LONDON, July 17. A conference of trade unions in London approved of the proposed alliance of miners, railwaymeif, engineers and transport workers, representing over five mililon members, for mutual aid and more particularly to support the miners in the present dispute.
