FIRE ON A STEAMER
EARLY MORNING BLAZE. NARROW ESCAPE OF THOSE ON BOARD. (By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright.) Received June 30, 11.15 a.m. SYDNEY, Juo 30. A disastrous lire occurred at three o'clock this morning on the inter-StaTe steamer Canberra, which was berthed at the King Street Wharf. 'I tie lire had a strong hold when discovered, and the whole vessel amidships was soon a mass of flames, which reached as high as the funnel. Practically all of the passenger accommodation was ablaze. Some of the passengers and crew were trapped. Four women were brought to the wharf in a semi-conscious condition. Considerable difficulty wus experienced in getting' the stewards out. 'there were between 40 and 50 people aboard at the time. Their losses arc considerable, practically all having to make their escape in their night attire. Owing to the vessel being held up, there were no firemen aboard and tile electric lights were disconnected at midnight. It will be some weeks before the vessel is again seaworthy.—Press Association.
