COUNTRY MEET

ASHHURST. (From Our Own Correspondent.; The Methodist Church anniversary tea meeting and lecture were held on Monday evening, when Rev. Rugby Pratt presided over an attendance of 140, who spent a most, pleasant evening. j\lr L. T. Bisson, of Napier, gave a most graphic and interesting Wclure entitled “Three thousand miles’ motoring from Seattle to Mexico,” and Mrs Bisson nicely, rendered several vocal items to a most appreciative audience. The Oroua County has commenced the widening of the Palmerston North road. The whole length from Whakarongo to the Gorge will be widened some six feet for the purpose of a main highway. Captain Williams has leased his 50-acre farm on the Pohangina road to Messrs Morris and Drummond.

Mr J. Smith, who was injured while working in the Gorge, is now home from hospital.

BUNNYTHORPE.

The Miniature Rifle Club held a most suceessful shoot at the range on Monday evening, there being twenty-two present. A handicap match was tired for trophies, resulting in five tieing for first place. In the shoot-off Mr T. Townsend proved the win- : ir'. The result of the shooting was as follows: F. Ros veil 89. T. Webb 90, W. Salmond 62, J. Nix 78, T. Ewan 90, C. Anderson 90, C. Young 87. J. Eggers 63, G. Lassen 78. C. Eggleton 87, J W. Stewart 84, T. Townsend 90, G. Emery 90, R. Mitchell £O. E. Sigglekow 83, T. Woodnias 54, W. Andrew 73. G. ('lively 81, R. Sutherland 84, A. O’Donell 78, J. Webber 68. For the next shoot special trophies have been donated. This shoot will be followed on the Tuesday night by a ladies’ night. On Wednesday the Anglican Church held a most successful euchre and dance in the Public Hall, when there was a large attendance.

The friends of Mr C. Eggleton, who mot with a motor cycle accident early in the week, will be pleased to hear that he is progressing- favourably. Mr 11. Headley, our local railway porter, is leaving for Christchurch at the end of rhe week' on his annual holidays. He is at present being relieved by Mr Thompson.
