WHEAT SUPPLIES.

CONFERENCE AT CHRISTCHURCH.

Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 20.

Important questions involved in tho purchasing of Australian wheat -o bo conducted by tho Government and the attitude of that section of the farmers who have indicated that they inte.id to hold their stocks of grain for speci lativo purposes, wore discussed at a conference which opened to-day in Christchurch between tlourmillers from various parts of the Dominion and tho wheat controller (Mr J. W. Collins). With Mr Collins were Messrs L. J. Schmitt (of the Department of Industries aiM Commerce, Wellington) and D. Colquhoun (officer in charge of the Department in Christchurch). r l he meeting was thoroughly representative of tho muling industry. . , . , ~ Regarding the importation of Australian wheat, the question of tho quat titles to go to the North Island and South Island respectively were discussed, together with the matter of prices to be paid therefor. Reports which wore disclosed by the wheat controller showed that New Zeeland wheat had been purchased very freely by millers since the conference between tho Government and representatives of -ho nulling and wheat growing industries in Wellington on April 23, when the mi.lers agreed to take the whole of the crop from tho hands of growers within two months. In a statement the wheat cor troller said that the millers had satisfied him that they wero buying wheat freely according to the agreement they .had entered into but in some part* of the Dominion millers were experiencing difficulty in (curing supplies, because some growers ap laxently intended' to retain possession of their supplies in the meantime for speculative roasons. ■ As tho result of deliberaticns on this question, a lino of action will to suggested to the Minister of Agriculture for his approval or otherwise in order to obtain the balance of tho yield before the end of June and before Australian wheat arrives in the Dominion.
