SUCCESS IN MUSIC.

ADDRESS BY COHEN, A valuable address to musicians was delivered by Mr M. Cohen, at the' practice of the Orchestral Society on Monday evening. Referring to the recent concert held in the Opera House, he stated that, despite some imperfections, the orchestra had done exceptionally well and on the whole he was quite satisfied. It behoved the society, however, to take care to admit to its active membership ranks only players of ability, lest too many “passengers” be carried. Good work could only be done by good players, and by private practice at home. There were from time to time defections from the ranks due to removals from the town, and private business demands made on players, and this caused vacancies very hard to fill. Members were asked to endeavour to interest instrumentalists to join up and he, Mr Colien, would be pleased to interview any players with a view to this end. Mr Cohen concluded his other towns in finding work for players suitable to their bands and orchestras, and mentioned that Palmerston North had just lost two buss players of considerable promise who had gone to strengthen the ranks of outside bands.

It is the intention of the society at its next concert to play numbers of a more popular character, and it is rehearsing “Poet and Peasant,” overture ballet music from “Faust,” “Thais,” “Meditation” (solo violin and orchestra), selection from “Veronique,” and concert waltz “Canzonetta,” and two small numbers which will be bracketed. The society lias now nearly 200 honorary members and a successful financial season is assured.
